Sweet and sticky fundraiser kicks off

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

Representatives from Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. came to Marshall Wednesday, July 1, to help director of The Lighthouse Shelter Debbie Wallace, Pastor Nelson Gabriel of Handy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Marshall Mayor Connie Latimer and others kick off a Krispy Kreme fundraising project at The Lighthouse Thrift Store.

The project will begin immediately and will continue through Friday, July 31.

During the fundraiser, involved groups will sell doughnuts using order forms. "Doughnut Day" will be Friday, August 7, between 9 a.m. and noon, when representatives from the company again visit Marshall, this time with a truck laden with all doughnuts ordered during the fundraiser. Those doughnuts will be freshly made that morning, with the help of a couple of Krispy Kreme shops in Kansas City, said Director of Fundraising Sales Sam Fowler.

Fowler told those present that for every 10 dozen original glazed doughnuts sold in the fundraiser, the company will provide, free of charge, one dozen original glazed doughnuts "to help you out."

Pastor Nelson Gabriel has said his goal for the fundraiser is to sell 5,000 dozen doughnuts. This goal was set in order to sell more than the most recent fundraising champions, who sold 4,700 dozen doughnuts. If more than 4,700 doughnuts are sold in this fundraiser, those involved will be featured on the Krispy Kreme Web site.

Before he left, Fowler told those present that he had brought along 50 dozen original glazed doughnuts, and that all were welcome to take some with them, free of charge.

The fundraiser was put together by Unity in the Community, an organization formed by Gabriel, and The Lighthouse Shelter. Funds raised will go to benefit these organizations.

Prices are $6 for one dozen original glazed doughnuts; $6 for a certificate entitling the bearer to one dozen original glazed doughnuts, and $1 off a second dozen; or $7.50 for one dozen chocolate iced, lemon filled, cream filled or raspberry filled doughnuts.

Order forms are available at The Lighthouse Shelter, The Lighthouse Thrift Store, Handy Chapel AME Church and online at www.thelighthouseshelter.org/kkofweb09.p.... For more information or to order, call 660-886-9880 or 660-886-8121.
