SHELTER NEWS

American Angels Help Lighthouse Children

Angels don’t always appear in in flowing robes with wings.  The American Angel’s Kids Care Club from Carrollton, Missouri show up in jeans, tennis shoes and sweatshirts ready to make a difference.  The American Angels are a group of 30 children and youth, ages 5 to 14.  These children have chosen to make volunteerism and outreach to others central in their lives.  This wonderful group has implemented service projects having local, national and worldwide impact.  In 2007, the American Angels chose to work with the Lighthouse Shelter to improve the lives of children served by the Lighthouse Shelter resident and outreach programs.

Recently the American Angels were awarded a mini-grant from Kids Care Clubs—Points of Light Foundation.  Using these funds and some muscle the group was able to provide the Lighthouse Children’s Center with new play equipment.

The Building Trades Class from the High School helped with pre-assembly and delivery of the playground equipment.  Then on Saturday, October, 27th the American Angels showed up to finish assembly.

At the same time the Angels assembled 75 Good-Eat Bags for children served by the shelter.  The bags included nutritious snacks and two new books.  Each was personalized by an American Angel to help brighten the recipient’s day.

Well, the work was not yet finished!  The American Angels picked up rakes and shovels and did a fall clean up on the yard at the Children’s Center.  The younger group members planted tulip, daffodils and crocus bulbs to prepare the lawn for next spring.

After the work was completed Debbie Wallace, Executive Director took the mothers on a tour of Lighthouse facilities and Faith Manley, Lighthouse Children’s Coordinator spoke with the children about children’s services and life in the shelter.

American Angels you have been a HUGE BLESSING for the Lighthouse Shelter and the children we serve.

THANK YOU!
